NadiaDiuu / Journal — Our Story
Why Nadia.
We didn't start by looking for someone to design T-shirts. It started with Nadia's art.
Arkasha and I first discovered her through her anti-war work. It was honest, sharp, sometimes painful, sometimes darkly funny. Nadia had this ability to take something enormous and overwhelming and express it through a simple drawing or just a few words. And for us, it felt deeply personal.
Nadia / The artist behind the words
Nadia is an immigrant. She had to begin a new life in a new country. So did we. In 2022, Arkasha and I left Russia because we could no longer accept what was happening in our country. We left behind our home, our careers, our friends, our routines, and the future we thought we understood. Then came a new country, a new language, new jobs, and the experience of starting over.
What happened was a tragedy for the world. And for us personally, it meant watching the world we knew change completely. We saw something of that feeling in Nadia's work — the anger, the absurdity, the fear, the sadness, and the attempt to understand how ordinary life can somehow continue when something so profoundly wrong is happening around you. That's where our connection to her art began.
But as we kept following Nadia, we discovered that her voice went far beyond her anti-war work. Relationships, anxiety, love, identity, loneliness, sex, everyday absurdity — the things people think about but don't always say out loud. Some pieces make you laugh. Some hurt a little. Some are tender. And some are almost ridiculously simple until you look at them and think: F*ck. Exactly.
That's what we love about Nadia's work. She doesn't tell you what you're supposed to feel. She doesn't turn complicated emotions into inspirational quotes. Sometimes she simply says the thing — the awkward thing, the tender thing, the angry thing, the ridiculous thing. And somehow, seeing it outside your own head makes you feel a little less alone.
So when the idea of creating something together appeared, it was never about asking Nadia to create designs for T-shirts. That would have been backwards.
Something that once lived on a screen or a piece of paper can now walk through New York, ride the subway, sit in a coffee shop, go to a party, or cross paths with a stranger. And maybe that stranger will read it, smile, and think: F*ck. Exactly. That's why Nadia.
That's why her art.
And that's why we make these T-shirts.
